Conference Presentation: National Heritage Academies

I had the opportunity to take an old school approach on an internal presentation for National Heritage Academies, based out of Grand Rapids. The presentation illustrations were approved on a Thursday, after many revisions to both the art direction and the actual presentation, and the assets were needed for the conference that following Monday. There wasn’t the luxury of time to special order presentation boards, as the team needed to be packed up for travel by Sunday morning. To get them ready in time, all the artwork had to be done by hand right on the boards. It was an awesome challenge.

The final presentation consisted of four boards total, all bearing velcro pieces of data that emphasized the speech given during the presentation.

Everything penned by me was made with just foam core and sharpies. The data pieces were printed in-house and attached with 3M velcro hooks. Everything was completed within three days between me and my project manager. It was a blast. :)

TED Talk Recording: Confessions of a Depressed Clown

TED-depressed clown
While still filling up my website with recent work, I’ve finally been able to do some graphic recording not relating to an NDA. I have done a handful of TED talks to keep my conceptual juices flowing between projects and will post more soon!

My favorite way of recording TED talks is via whiteboard, and I have a nice three panel spread to work on in my studio. Minimal detail was added after the talk was finished, but 90% of the visuals were created while I listened to the talk in realtime.

This TED Talk is by Kevin Breel, who goes into intimate detail of his own struggle with depression. I enjoyed recording his information as I encounter many who struggle with depression in my social work at Heartside Ministry.

Check out the talk here.

Heartside neighborhood safety concerns

Heartside neighborhood safety concerns

Meeting one of several with the Heartside neighborhood in Grand Rapids addressing safety. I was privileged to not only graphic record the meeting but participate in brainstorming with the neighbors and business owners on our next steps as a growing community to address these issues.
